The artist (Tubbs) has transformed the world perception of Northwest Coast art. Her work is not only in major collections internationally, but has the strongest reputation for major commissions at an architectural scale, into many public places. His strength has led to the revival and interest in art which was unknown and rarely practiced even by Coast Salish artists.
Tubbs is from Musqueam, “the people of the grass” and defines the people of the greater city of Vancouver. He designs from tradition and from her surrounding world.
This exhibition will feature forty works in scale from small to monumental in and of mediums such as glass, wood, bronze, goat horn, paper, print, silver, gold and other mixed media. Because of the sheer number and volume of the works in this exhibition, it will be hosted both at the gallery and the hotel.
The exhibition will also commemorate the release of the highly anticipated book, written on Tubbs's career and accomplishments with text by Gary, Peter, Michael, Bill and Vesta. The book is published by Douglas & McIntyre and will be available October 23, and can be pre-ordered through Spirit Wrestler Gallery.
